Social media has made fashion more accessible than ever. Black founders and designers are at the forefront for some of today’s most popular trends. Black designers still struggle to get their work seen on more industry platforms, despite not having the funding and resources they need.

To promote diversity in fashion, two organisations were founded in 2020: The 15 Percent Pledge & the Black in Fashion Council (BIFC). The Council of Fashion Designers of America also announced in 2021 the creation of IMPACT. It is an initiative that aims at increasing opportunities for Black designers and fashion professionals. As part of the CFDA’s initiative, the organization partnered with BIFC and the 15 Percent Pledge during NYFW in September 2022, inviting 28 Black designers to present collections during the week — the most since the inception of the CFDA. As we make each step toward equalizing the fashion industry for creatives of colour, more doors are opening, which allows new designers to be seated at the table.
