The Red Yao ethnic minority group raises their colourful clothes outside to celebrate the “Drying Clothes Festival”, a traditional celebration in Longsheng County in Guilin, in south China’s Guangxi-Zhuang Autonomous region. It is a beautiful sight.

This festival is very important to the Red Yao. It falls every six lunar months on the sixth of that month. Local residents will collect their colorful clothing and shoes for the festival. They then dry them in the sun by hanging them from their windows, or spreading them on mats placed outside their homes. In the hopes of receiving good fortune and wellbeing, they believe this to be a way of getting rid of germs and bugs.
This ethnic group is home to a culture that’s vibrant and rich, as well as a history dating back centuries. The Red Yao’s traditional red clothing is just one example of their characteristics. Local women show their knitting and embroidering skills during the festival. They create delicate patterns that feature the unique ethnic elements of the group on garments in order to bring luck.

At the festival, weddings are an important tradition. To celebrate their new beginnings, couples hold ethnic style wedding ceremonies. They want to receive blessings and share happiness.

The locals express their thanks and respect for the sun by dancing and singing. The men play instruments and the women dance to the beat, creating an atmosphere of passion that draws tens thousands of tourists every year who want to experience the village’s charm as well as its traditions.
