RMG Industry keen to improve transparency and competitiveness: BGMEA President

Faruque Hashedan (president, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, BGMEA) said that Bangladesh RMG has been focusing on technology upgrading.

Faruque Hassan stated that “We’re preparing to face the challenges of a fourth industrial revolution,” at a meeting she had with Kris Van Broekhoven CEO of ES3G Limited in the UK and Munawar Urdin, Bangladesh Country Manager, at BGMEA Complex Dhaka.

President of BGMEA stated that “By embracing technological advancements and developing workers’ skills, we aim at turning the challenges into opportunities. Upgrading technology will contribute towards enhancing the industry’s future competitiveness.”

The two discussed technological advancements that have shaped the fashion industry worldwide, and how technology can be used to help Bangladeshi garment factories show their human rights credentials abroad.

Kris Van Broekhoven expressed delight that the BGMEA was keen to help new technology that increases transparency and worker rights. With the Alliance, Accord and other initiatives Bangladesh is leading the charge. This has brought a lot more investment to Bangladesh from ES3G, where there are the most green garment factories worldwide. 

He said, “With BGMEA’s support, our technology will enable increased transparency and better communication regarding worker treatment to retailers buyers and brands as well as their customers online or in-store.”

The topic also included ES3G technology, which is being used in Bangladeshi garment factories. This brings a level of transparency and accountability to the sector.

Shovon Islam, chair of the BGMEA Standing Committee on Press, Publication and Publicity, was present as well.
