Ludhiana News: Losses for small garment manufacturers as Chinese fabrics make big inroads into city| Ludhiana News

Ludhiana, India: A huge influx in cheap Chinese fabric has hampered the sales of micro- and small-scale garment makers for the last few months.
The cost of Chinese fabrics is much lower than the local ones, so garment makers using Chinese fabric are able to offer their products at lower prices.
A few businessmen, however, have asked the central government for help to rescue the local fabric-only garment producers.
Harish Kairpal, president of Ludhiana MSME Association, said, “Businesses of winter garment and allied products manufacturers have been jeopardised due to huge import of fabric from China. As the Chinese raw material is cheaper as compared to locally manufactured fabrics, the cost of garments made by Chinese fabric is almost 10-15% lower than those using local raw material.”
“Slowly and steadily, the Chinese fabric is eating into the market of the Ludhiana-made fabric and pushing the small-scale garment units of city towards destruction. The government must take notice of this problem and take corrective action at the earliest in order to save the industry,” he added.
Kapil JoshiThe president Purana Bazar Hosiery Manufacturers Association, said, “The sale of locally made winter garments and hosiery products has nosedived due to the freely available Chinese fabric in the local markets. The fabric producers aren’t able to compete with the prices of imported fabric from China. The Centre’s Make in India initiative is being hampered by this. There is a dire need to ensure that import of Chinese fabrics is stopped immediately or else thousands of garment and fabric traders and manufacturers will be destroyed.”
