Due to the unique and affordable items available, thrift shopping is gaining popularity. This allows customers to shop for unique items and save money, while also allowing them to have a great time.
It is a question of whether thrift shopping is a counter-trend to fast fashion or if it is a new fashion trend.
Our clothes are where they belong
Many people are now more able to afford new styles and have become addicted. People have turned shopping for clothes into a means of expressing themselves through fashion and sharing their looks on social media. However, what happens when these clothes are no longer fashionable? Do they get thrown out, reused by fashion companies, or donated?
Environmental pollution is a result of the clothes we use every day. After we’re done with them, our clothes often end up in landfills. They occupy space and can leach harmful substances into the soil. 73% of all waste goes to landfills. An average of 12 clothes per person was worn annually in 1980. This number is now at 50, according to the most recent statistics.
According to projections, the fashion industry will be second in global polluting after the oil and gas industries. The average release of new products by luxury brands is every 3-4 month. Zara and Forever 21, however, have managed to be ahead of their competition by rapidly producing trendy items at lower prices. They are now able give shoppers the runway looks at a fraction of what it costs. Consumer interest is high because of the constant change in clothing.
However, there are ways to combat this problem, like supporting ethical and sustainable fashion brands prioritising environmentally-friendly practices. One option is thrift shopping. This involves reusing clothes and giving new lives to them, which reduces the demand for clothing production.
Bangladesh manufactures fashionable clothing
Bangladesh is second in world apparel exports, which makes it an attractive choice for fashion industry professionals. It is a center for fast fashion and has a high level of manufacturing. However, it also makes it vulnerable to fashion industry waste.
Certain areas are famous for being able to access low-quality, export-quality clothing at extremely reasonable prices. This is what has led to the rise of thrift shopping.
Thrift Stores Bangladesh
A lot of thrift shops source their clothes from quality export-quality clothing that has been worn only once. These stores also often allow customers to donate their used clothing. This allows them to keep the products in stock for longer periods of time.
The idea of using repurposed clothing has become more popular than the desire to buy new pieces every day. However, it is possible for some to still fall prey to the temptation to purchase cheap or fast-fashion clothing from these stores. This can result in an increase in clothes per person.
The perspective of the Seller
Mulberry Clothing is a thrift shop owned by Arshad Shawki, Kashfia Sjana and Kashfia Sujana. Mulberry Clothing has been around for a while. They work closely together in every aspect of the business from stocking the shop to styling individual pieces to make unique looks.
Both Sujana, and Shawki are students who have turned to the thrift business as a profession. Sujana studies at Birshtha Munshi Abdur Rouf Public College. Shawki attends North South University. Their mother also helps them manage their thrift shop online and run an online store for handmade, embroidered bags.
Sustainable fashion, we believe, is the only way forward. The fast fashion industry results in a lot of waste and high energy. Sujana stated that people should reuse clothing and accessories more often. “As thrift stores, it is easy for customers to select and purchase affordable and sustainable clothing.”
Shawki and Sujana, thrift store owners, are encouraging customers to embrace the concept of recycling clothes. Treadmill stores offer a viable alternative in places such as Bangladesh, where many of the garments that are rejected end up being thrown away. To continue sustainable fashion, many are happy to let go of their used items.
Mulberry Clothing’s goal is to provide high-quality, affordable products for customers at the best possible price. Sujana stated that while most customers are looking for affordable clothing, they enjoy being able browse through a range of styles from many cultures.
If they find something special, minor flaws are acceptable. To ensure that customers know about any problems, we always attach a photograph of the faults to our posts. “We believe customers will be drawn to unusual clothing at an affordable cost,” she said.
Sweet Repeats Bd is another online thrift shop owned by Fatima Taknim Maliha. She’s a recent graduate of BRAC University and shared her views on thrifting.
The owner stated that “The cycle for reusing clothing is our main theme, and it always has an environmental safety purpose.”
My store encourages people to buy sustainable clothes, since people are more aware and shifting to thrifty items. The environment can be protected and they will still enjoy high-quality clothing at a reasonable price. Pre-loved clothing can be a wonderful way to support a cause such as saving the planet.
Customers have become more aware of the value of ethical fashion choices through environmentally-conscious sellers. Many customers were unaware that their clothes choices had ethical and ecological implications. Thrift stores have become a more sustainable option, allowing customers to keep up-to-date while still being conscious of the environment.
