Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association has assured that visa restrictions imposed on the United States won’t negatively affect apparel shipments coming from Bangladesh.

Faruque Hassan, President of the BGMEA, said that thanks to advanced communications systems worldwide the industry is able to continue to operate without officials having to travel.

Hassan pointed out that even during the global lockdowns prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic, the apparel business remained operational, illustrating the industry’s adaptability to remote work.

He made these remarks during a press conference held at the BGMEA office in Dhaka’s Uttara, where the media was briefed on the current state of the local apparel sector.

He expressed confidence that visa restrictions would not adversely affect apparel shipments to the US, emphasising that the BGMEA’s primary concern is helping its members meet the diverse requirements set by buyers to enhance trade.

Hassan cited a visit made by a United States Trade Representative delegation to the BGMEA Office, even if they asked about the progress of labour law reforms as well as adjustments to minimum wages for garment workers.

The BGMEA President underlined that the US does not intend to harm the general population of Bangladesh, recognizing the substantial employment provided by the country’s garment industry.
