Cyclist dies as BMW car hits him on Mahipalpur flyover, driver arrested – ThePrint – PTIFeed

New Delhi, Nov 27, (PTI), Police have reported that a BMW car struck a 50-year old man’s sport bike on Sunday at Mahipalpur flyover in Southwest Delhi.

According to Manoj C, the Deputy Commissioner for Police (Southwest), Manoj C stated that the driver of this luxury vehicle was taken into custody.

Police said that the incident happened in Vasant Kunj.

Initial inquiry revealed that a car’s tyre burst, and the driver lost control of it, hitting the cyclist.

Police obtained information and reached Mahipalpur Flyover in direction of Dhaula Kuan to find the BMW vehicle bearing the VIP number, as well as the bicycle, which were both found badly damaged. Officials said that they had received the necessary details.

Although the BMW car driver was quick to rush him to the hospital, doctors declared that he had died.

They identified the deceased as Shubendu Chatterjee who was a Gurugram Sector 49 resident.

The case filed under section 279 (rash driving on a public road) and Section 304A (causing death through negligence) was registered. Police stated that the car involved in the crime has been taken into custody.

Sunil (40), who lives in Punjabi Bagh and is a businessman, has been identified as the owner.

Police said that he purchased the car used and that the sticker from Finance Committee (Delhi Cantonment Board) was still on it. They also added that the necessary legal sections would be required for the transaction after verification of documents.

They said that he denied being present at the accident, and they are verifying the facts.

Somvir was identified as the driver by police.

Meanwhile, a person on Twitter claiming to be the friend of victim Chatterjee wrote, “Today our friend was cycling in Delhi and got crushed by a high-end car. We want police to find out the culprit and investigate through CCTV cameras in Delhi.” He also posted a picture in which a sticker can be seen “Chairman Finance Committee, Delhi Cantonment Board” written on it.

Chatterjee’s friend Himanshu Khanna, 39 (pictured above), said that Chatterjee was a committed cyclist.

“I got information around 7.30 am from a cyclist, who was passing through the area, regarding an accident near Mahipalpur. He stated that there was an accident in which a bicycle collided with another cyclist, but he couldn’t identify who it was. He was unable to identify the cyclist. I requested his photograph.

“I am associated with several cycling groups and later got to know that the cycle belonged to Chatterjee. So I ran to get to Chatterjee’s hospital. Police informed me immediately that Chatterjee was being taken to Safdarjung. I rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead,” Khanna said.

Chatterjee used to reside in Gurugram and worked in a Delhi garment factory. Khanna stated that Chatterjee was a cyclist for 10 years and is survived by his 20-year old daughter.

“I came in contact with him three years ago through cycling. He had recently completed more than 70,000 kilometres riding cycle which is a big thing,” said Khanna, who is also a resident of Gurugram.

“Our group goes on a cycle trip of around 200 to 250 kilometres on weekends. We prefer Golf Course Road, Sohna Elevated Road and Gurgaon-Faridabad Road,” he said. PTI NIT NIT KVK KVK
