The India-UAE Free Trade Agreement gives India duty-free access to the garment sector, and will contribute to increasing domestic exports of that country’s products, AEPC announced Tuesday.

According to the Apparel Export Promotion Committee (AEPC), more than 20 national exporters will be participating in IATF in Dubai, where they can showcase their products.

Chairman Fair and Exhibitions AEPC Ashok Rajani claimed that India was the second largest supplier for ready-made clothes to the UAE, behind China.

The UAE is the most important trading partner in India for garment exports. He said that this share was expected to grow further with the UAE-India CEPA Agreement, giving Indian garment exports duty-free access.

CEPA is the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.

When speaking about the show, he stated that the exporters were looking to display the finest of India’s clothing designs in accordance with current fashion trends.

The Fair will provide huge opportunities to the UAE’s clothing companies to source raw materials from India, he said.

Rajani elaborated on the strengths and weaknesses of the garment sector, stating that, having been established in traditional garments the Indian apparel industry is now moving on to newer MMF areas with technical textiles valued at USD 16 billion, with a 6 percent share of the global marketplace.
