Luzerne County Students thrifting for Back-to-School Clothes

Claire Alfree, Newswatch 16 reporter takes us on a tour of a thrift shop that teaches teens to save money and be fashionable.

LUZERNE, Pa. — Dylan Cummings from Dallas says going shopping for new shoes and clothes is how he knows the first day of school is coming.

The thrift store was a new experience for me. I had been to other shops in the Wilkes-Barre mall, but after seeing this, I am tempted to start shopping at it. “This has turned my head,” said he.

The low price is not the only reason. He finds new pieces for his closet among the racks. There’s a Rumor in Luzerne.

They have Yeezys, Jordans and other types that I can’t find. Some of these shoes I have never seen before. Cummings said, “These shoes are very rare.”

Cummings, like other teens who have been watching the thrifting videos that are taking over social media to create a new trend of repurposing clothing as their outfits for first day of school.

Emma Christianson, from Wilkes-Barre and a Rumor Has It customer, explained that thrift shops used to have older clothing, but they now cater to a younger audience.

Christianson is now more open-minded to the idea of thrifting, and she wants to keep this trend going for the entire school year.

Christianson explained that “especially on TikTok it’s glamourizing in a certain way. You see videos of ‘go shopping with me’, which is all this adorable stuff I have never seen before at thrift shops.”

Jordan Givens has an entire closet made up of mostly thrifted items. According to her, she not only saves money but is also helping the environment.

Givens explained that by keeping your house clean, you leave a less noticeable footprint.

She is happy that other young people share her passion for saving money.

It’s okay to spend less money. Not everything has to be new. “It doesn’t have to all come from the mall,” added she.
