Selena Quintanilla: Jennifer Lopez Honors the Iconic Star she Played 25 years ago

Jennifer Lopez remembers Selena Quintanilla 25-years after playing her role in a movie that made her famous.

The 53-year old celebrity was seen wearing a Selena shirt while she was shopping at Cost Plus World Market with her family.

The faux-vintage-black garment-dyed Selena shirt featured the Tejano music icon, singing into a microphone.

The graphic T-shirt was paired with dark grey suede boots and flowered trousers. Jennifer sparkled in gold with huge hoop earrings, large chains bracelets and rings. Jennifer also carried aviator sunglasses and a luxury leather bag with a gold clasp.

Emme, Jennifer’s 14-year old daughter, was with her during the visit to the specialty retailer.

J. Lo’s older sister Lynda Lopez, and her 14 year-old daughter Lucie joined them.

Jennifer was a student of filmography and she was hired to play the role of Selena Quintanilla (the legendary Tejano singer) in the biopic.

Selena Quintanilla is one of Mexico’s most famous singers. She was known as Queen of Tejano Music (a music style that blends American and Mexican influences) which she championed.

Yolanda Saviar, her manager at her boutiques and fan clubs, murdered the singer in March 1995. It was revealed that she had embezzled funds from her. With her 1994 Grammy win, she was the first Tejano singer to be awarded a Grammy.

J-Lo uploaded snippets and interviews from the film to Instagram in March. She also discussed her famous career as an Instagrammer.

She stated that they were commemorating the 25th anniversary SELENA! Today we celebrate and remember Selena’s history and music. The film was very important to her, she said. Selena is very close to her family and feels so blessed to be cast as Selena. It’s an honour she will never forget, she said.

In the meantime, Selena Quintanillas dress is on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. Entertainment Nation/Nación del Espectáculo, a new exhibition at the museum that opened on December 9, 2022, features the late singer’s black leather jacket and satin bustier from the 1994 Tejano Music Awards in San Antonio, Texas.

According to the museum, they’re very pleased to host you at our new exhibit. It will include a variety of objects as well as interactive experiences drawn from the museum’s collection.

This dress was given by the Quintanilla Family and is the same as the one worn in Corpus Christi by Selena.
