UK’s GSDCost increases Nobland’s productivity 13%

UK-based Coats Digital has announced that Nobland International Inc, a global fashion manufacturer of cut and sewn knit and woven garments, has reduced the time it takes to produce core styles by 13 per cent since its adoption of Coats Digital’s GSDCost. This has resulted in significant improvements in the whole sewing cycle and enabled each of Nobland’s factories to respond to new order requests with greater speed and accuracy.

Following its successful completion of Coats Digital’s GSDCost training bootcamp, relevant Nobland teams have been quick to capitalise on GSDCost’s scientifically based tools and methods to optimise its Cost to Make (CM) processes and negotiate production costs and targets quickly and effectively, according to a press release by Coats Digital.

UK’s Coats Digital has announced that Nobland International Inc has reduced the time it takes to produce core styles by 13 per cent since its adoption of Coats Digital’s GSDCost. This resulted is significant improvement in the entire sewing process and allowed each Nobland factory to respond with greater speed to customer orders.

Nobland International discovered that GSDCost was not scientifically based and could be limiting in achieving production goals, CM prices calculations, etc. With capacity plans founded entirely on historical data based on the planning administrator’s experience, and with production goals set on subjective break-even points, Nobland lacked the consistency and uniformity it needed to set realistic production goals or a realistic production flow for its sewing lines. The subsequent difficulties in establishing accurate CM costs plans led to lengthy negotiations between factory managers and sales staffs regarding employee wages and production targets.

Nobland International began a three-month GSDCost training program. This was in order to give the relevant Nobland team a solid theoretical knowledge of GSDCost motion codes as well as standard style sequences. Nobland’s solid training combined with the hands-on application of the software allowed it to establish a robust Standard-Minute database for its core clothing styles.

“We were able to familiarise ourselves with the GSDCost scientific concept reasonably quickly across several training sessions with Coats Digital’s experts. Each member of the team was able to learn quickly and get to grips at the appropriate training levels so they could perform a faster process analysis. This factor has enabled us to provide reliable SMV targets for the benefit of our sales and production teams, and we are now using our GSDCost knowledge as well as sharing new ideas, so we can continue to build a successful library for our core styles,” said Don Choi, IE manager at Nobland International Inc.

Nobland’s teams successfully completed the Phase-1 and Phase-2 GSDCost certification training programme in August 2022, and were able to effectively use the scientifically obtained SMVs to provide accurate costing, planning, and production targets.

Nobland saw a 13 percent improvement in overall efficiency thanks to the GSDCost training. It also ended unnecessary disputes between its sales team and factories regarding CM cost and other processes. The management team was able to establish realistic targets for its employees and negotiate fair wages in all agreements.

“Coats Digital’s GSDCost is the only solution available that uses scientifically-proven methods to assess production goals realistically, so that accurate planning can be obtained and increased productivity achieved. GSDCost’s code generation analyses for various production tasks provide us with rigorous, consistent data insights that make production improvement activities possible. We have successfully trained production workers and established standards based on motion behavior analyses of most productive production processes. We are delighted to have realised a 13 per cent efficiency improvement so quickly and our realistic benchmarks have made each of our factories much more competitive as a result,” said Eunice Kim, Nobland International Inc. executive director customer solutions planning.

Coats Digital’s GSDCost method analysis and pre-determined times solution is widely acknowledged as the de-facto international standard across the sewn products industry. The solution supports a more collaborative, transparent, and sustainable supply chain, in which brands and manufacturers establish and optimise ‘International Standard Time Benchmarks’ using standard motion codes and predetermined times. The use of common standards and language allows for accurate cost predictions, negotiation based on facts, and more efficient garment production.

“We are delighted that Nobland has achieved such remarkable results following its adoption of GSDCost. Global price competition is increasing and fashion companies must be innovative and agile to stay competitive in an ever-changing trading environment. Standardizing SMVs based upon scientific principles can help apparel manufacturers stay one step ahead. This will allow them to increase production efficiency and make deals with buyers that are based on accurate costs. Nobland’s dedication to the GSDCost training programme was second to none and its teams can be exceptionally proud of what they have achieved. Nobland is consequently leading the field with regards its knowledge and utilisation of GSDCost, and it remains one of the most agile and competitive players in our territory as a result,” Irene Won is the customer success manager at Coats Digital..

The release added that Nobland International Inc has key benefits and a high ROI. These include a reduction of SMVs by 13 percent; higher productivity; smooth CM negotiation between sales and factory floors; fair negotiated prices costings to customers; the ability to handle complex orders; stable, fact-based manufacturing costs; and possible performance incentive programs.
